With October being National Dessert Month, it is only fitting we celebrate by highlighting one of our very own local QC small businesses, “Michelle’s Creative Cookies!”
We had a chance to get to know Michelle a little better and this is what we discovered!
Born and raised in the Quad Cities, Michelle attended Assumption High School. She then went on to graduate from Minnesota State University, Mankato, earning her degree in accounting; as well as her CPA! By day, Michelle is an accountant. By night she is a cookie-making superhero!
She and her husband, Mike, have been married for 10 years and they have three kids. She got into baking as an outlet, exploring her creative side to balance her day job. Michelle’s love of baking sparked from her mother who was a Pampered Chef consultant for more than 20 years!
So, she was always in the kitchen helping every chance she could trying out new recipes! Bringing that passion into adulthood, Michelle often made cookies for different family gatherings and then decided to make some cookies for a co-worker’s baby shower last year.
Everyone asked WHERE she got the cookies from and just raved about them. It was then that she thought maybe other people would enjoy her cookies, too! So, she decided a home-based bakery would be a great fit! (We agree!) In Michelle’s other free time she enjoys running, biking, graphic design, and any kinds of arts and crafts!
After learning all this we had to ask a few more questions!
Why did you decide to open your own small business instead of working for someone else?
I love the fact that I can be a home based bakery and take on orders when it works best in my schedule. I’m also a self-declared entrepreneur at heart!
What sets you apart from other bakeries in the area?
There are so many talented bakers in our area – we are a blessed community! What sets me apart is my individualized approach with customers, attention to detail and willingness to take on a challenge!
What do you think locals should know about you?
I am completely self-taught in the baking world, which is encouraging and exciting for anyone with a similar passion! You can do anything you set your mind to!
What is your favorite part about being a local small business owner in the Quad Cities?
The people in the QC are truly amazing. They have such fun and inspirational ideas that make me SO excited to do what I do.
Favorite thing to bake? –or cook! And EAT!
Pumpkin anything! I have a pumpkin bar recipe that is AMAZING! And although pie-making is NOT my specialty… I will gladly devour a slice or two of pumpkin pie with extra whipped cream!
Favorite cookies you’ve ever made for a customer?
It seems like each week I finish a new favorite – but if I had to pick ONE it would be these adorable crabs for a crab boil event this past summer. They were the cutest little crabs you ever did see! (pictured above)
What do you want to make sure EVERYONE knows about Michelle’s Creative Cookies!
Bringing your ideas to life is my passion! Cookies are the perfect addition to any event and will definitely be something your guests talk about for a long time. Also, when you support a small business you are giving back to the community in an amazing way. You are encouraging someone to keep reaching for the stars and follow their dreams!
