Luxe Suite Hair Design is locally owned and operated by Dubuque native, Tomica Teager.
We had an awesome opportunity to get to know her and learn about her business!

I’m originally from the Dubuque, IA area. Which, when I was growing up, was much smaller and way more conservative than the Quad Cities. After I graduated from Cosmetology school, I knew I wanted to relocate to a larger area. The Quad Cities seemed like it would be a great place to start out. It was a larger area, with much more to offer. I originally thought of the QC area as a stepping stone, thinking I wanted to move along to an even bigger area eventually. Through the years, I’ve discovered that I had everything I needed right here. I love that the Quad Cities is a comfortable, easy area to live in. It’s grown a lot since I’ve moved here, and seems to constantly add more to its culture. I love all the new boutiques, restaurants, breweries, and local businesses that have been popping up. I’ve lived here for over 20 years, and now, it’s home!

Who/what inspired you to become a hair dresser?
I really wasn’t sure what to do after high school. I always had an interest for hair and fashion, and certainly did a lot of experimenting with my own. So I originally thought I would go to cosmetology school and work as a stylist until I decided what I really wanted to do. But I was better at it than I thought I would be, and through experience and maturity, I progressed into making it a career. Here I am over 20 years later.

When did you realize you wanted to make a career of it?
I think when I decided to be a businesswoman first and a hairstylist second, that’s when it became a career. In order to be an excellent hairstylist, you have to be a good businesswoman first…it’s 80/20. If you’re business focused, you make sure your product is reaching its fullest potential, making you a great stylist.

Why did you decide to open your own small business as opposed to working in an already established salon?
I was never really interested in being on my own, and I was certainly late in my career when I finally did. Even while working for someone else, I always maintained the 80/20 motto, treating everything I had to offer, as if I were working for myself. Being a good business minded employee and stylist. It was when my business needs were not being met where I was currently employed, that I decided to go out on my own, and implement my business plan there. It just didn’t make sense for me to go work for someone else anymore. I’ve been doing it for a year and a half now, and I have no regrets.

What is your favorite part about being located in the Quad Cities?
The Quad Cities has such a diverse group of people living here. It really gives me an ever changing “canvas” to work on. So many different kinds of people, with so many different types of designs to express and explore.

Do you do your own hair? Or do you enjoy relaxing and letting someone else do it?
I always have someone else do my hair. It’s how I learn what it’s like to be sitting where they’re sitting. I want to experience what my clients are, good things or bad. It’s how I learn to make myself a better businessperson and a better stylist, and how to make my guests experience in my chair, the best it can be.

What do you wish more people knew about running a small business?
It’s not for the weak, that’s for sure. I also have learned how important it is to shop and support locally owned businesses. We have a lot of competition with big box stores, internet sales, etc. But what makes us as small businesses worth it is, the experience. A customer is not just a number or a stat to us, they’re everything to us, which comes through in our customer service and what we offer the community.

What makes Luxe Suite Hair Design different than other hair salons?
It’s just me, and my craft. When you come to my suite, it’s just you and me, and you have your own space to enjoy and relax in. I really pride myself in trying to make sure every guest has their own unique experience. Whether they want to talk endlessly, or just relax and decompress, the space and time is yours. You make it what you want.

What do you want to make sure EVERYONE knows about Luxe Suite Hair Design?
As a hair designer, I’m always seeking out new innovative ways to sharpen my skills. I receive advanced education and training regularly to make sure I’m versed in the latest hair trends. My ultimate goal is always to deliver the best experience and personal design to each person in my chair. I love to share my enthusiasm, energy and knowledge with my guests.
