Lock 14 Dam Good Salsa is a locally owned and operated by cousins, Haylee Sommers and Heather Scrowther. Their salsa is made at The Spotlight Event Center in Moline! Stop by Hy-Vee on Avenue of the Cities, Moline or the Edge Eatery and Drinkatorium in Rapids City to try some for yourself!

We had an awesome opportunity to get to know this team and learn about their business!

What inspired you to start making salsa?
Heather has been making salsa for get-together’s for at least 10 years. One night we were munching on some chips and salsa and chatting about the upcoming boating season. We needed to make some cash fast as we wanted to buy a lily pad for our boats, and didn’t want to spend the money out of our own pockets. So, we decided we needed to sell this salsa on the river to all the boaters! That is where we came up with the name Lock 14! We spend most of our summer going through Lock 14 in Le Claire, IA and wanted our logo to resemble the lock and the Mississippi River.

When did you decide you were ready to turn it into a business?
We quickly decided to turn it into a business. One successful summer, and we knew we had something good going. We work well together, we have known each other our entire lives because we are cousins! From day one we knew this was going to be a fun adventure no matter how big we get.

Your small business is definitely unique. What do you, personally, think makes it most unique to the Quad Cities Area?
We are just out there to have fun, meet people and share our salsa. We both work full time, have two children and lead typical busy lives! Lock 14 has been a fun way to get out there and try something new.

What is your favorite part about owning a salsa company?
Opening a business has been a great learning experience. Our favorite part is meeting new people that love our product.

If the Quad Cities needed to know one thing about your business, what would it be?
Our first batch, We walked the streets of LeClaire, IA having people sample Lock 14 salsa from a lunch cooler. Then we stopped at The Edge Eatery and Drinkatorium after and they LOVED it and we had a dozen orders the next day. And the rest is history.

Where do you get your ingredients?
We try to buy all of our ingredients from HyVee on the Avenue of the Cities in Moline.

You make both, but which do you prefer? Regular or spicy?
We call Heather the spicy half! Haylee is definitely more of a regular kind of girl! We also have a special edition habanero that we like to make once in a while.

What is your go-to chip for dipping in your salsa?
We had a charity event with Lobo’s Salsa and Snoop’s provided chips. Hands down the most awesome chips! But, we also like the HyVee tortilla chip strips! Perfect for dipping.

What is your favorite part about being located in the Quad Cities?
The kindness of everyone that hears about us. Whether they are trying our salsa for the first time, ordering their weekly order, or giving us a shout out on social media. Everyone has been so kind and supportive.

How long has your business been running?
We have almost hit the one year mark!

What are your hopes/vision of Lock 14 Dam Good Salsa for the future?
To change the world one dam good salsa at a time!

Is there anything you hope to see more of in the QC?
The Quad Cities is great! We would love to see more local businesses growing and supporting one another.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
We can’t say thank you enough to our family and friends that supported us from the beginning of this adventure, and we are so grateful for the new customers we have and can’t wait to get even more Lock 14 customers!

Thank you so much, Heather and Haylee, for giving us the opportunity to get to know you and your business a little better! We wish you the best of luck in the future and can’t wait to see you and your business continue to flourish!

We encourage everyone to help support our local businesses by simply choosing to follow them on social media and engage with their posts; like them, love them, and share them with your friends and family!
