I was raised in the small town of Plymouth, Wisconsin. Growing up, I had always explored with my hair and look, so it was no surprise to my parents when I decided to choose the hair industry as my career path! My career began at an Aveda Salon in Oshkosh, WI where I gained most of my knowledge of color. It is when I moved to Milwaukee, however, that my career truly began to flourish. For me, education must be the center of my career. I believe that if a stylist is not continually learning new things, it is not possible to truly grow as a hair stylist. Milwaukee was the epicenter of education and was what developed my career. In turn, I gained a new passion. My passion no longer lied just behind the chair. I developed a new passion in education. I wanted to be able to help other stylists achieve their dreams, just like I did. My career then brought me to the Quad Cities where I was given the opportunity to bring my knowledge and support to Five Star Salon Spa! Five Star has supported me and has given me the greatest opportunity to use all my knowledge in the position of Co-director of Education with the owner, Jeffrey Porter.
Kelly Possami is the Co-director of Education at locally owned and operated, Five Star Salon Spa.
We had an awesome opportunity to get to know her learn about this business!
Who/what inspired you to get into hairdressing?
Growing up, we discovered that I have a memory recall learning disability and I get things that I read mixed up. This drove me to find an outlet that would help me learn how to deal with and handle my learning disability every day. I struggled so much in school, but the time of day I got to be in art class made school bearable for me. This creative outlet was the key. I went to a career fair sophomore year of high school where I talked with hairstylist and saw what this career had done for them. I shadowed my hairstylist, Karen, at Tangled Hair Salon in Plymouth, WI and I knew from then on, being hairstylist was my calling. I graduated early and went to beauty school at 17 and never looked back.
When did you realize you wanted to make a career of it?
Sophomore year of high school when I went to a career fair is when I decided I could really make a career out of hairdressing.
What services do you personally offer at Five Star Salon Spa?
I offer Hair extensions, color, women’s and men’s hair-cutting, amazing blowouts and formal up-dos and styles for special events!
What is your specialty?
My personal specialties are Easipro hair extensions and In-Salon Education!
What makes you unique?
What I feel makes me unique is my ability to have genuine relationship with my clients. A lot of my now close friends were my clients first!
What is your favorite part about working in the Quad Cities?
My favorite part about working in the Quad Cities is definitely the people. Quad City people are truly the epitome of Midwest charm, and I am from Wisconsin, so that’s saying a lot! It is truly amazing the way people in this community will go out of their way to help you or recommend someone they know that can help you. This area really is a true community. -And of course, I love the Mississippi River!
Do you do your own hair? Or do you enjoy relaxing and letting someone else do it?
I do not do my own hair. Maybe I cut my bangs from time to time, but the girls at work do my hair! I do not like sitting still for very long, so it’s hard for me to relax and let them do their magic. I usually get the Five Star Staple, “the drive by.” This is a quick in-and-out base touch-up between services! It’s really great for the client on-the-go!
What makes Five Star Salon Spa different than other hair salons?
Five Star is unique and different in the way that we are a team based salon. There is no competition between hairstylists. We help each other out when ever needed and that type of teamwork makes the days flow seamlessly. Most importantly, the clients get to enjoy a fabulous experience from start to finish! We are truly a family!
What do you want to make sure EVERYONE knows about you and your work?
Everyone should know that hair, literally, is my canvas. But, aside from hair, I have enjoyed every person I have met through my career! Because of all the different clients, salon owners, and hairstylists I have come across in my 16 years of doing hair, I have been shaped into the person and hairstylist that I am today.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
To all the clients out there:
If hairstylists don’t make mistakes, they never become amazing hair artists! So, please, always be honest to your hairstylist. If you don’t love a look, tell them, because that is an opportunity for them to learn and still give you your dream hair!!
